This was a measure of "gates" that could perform the basic logic of a neuron, and it was still in the hundreds of millions range.

The figure of a billion transistors *was* mentioned, as well as the millions of cores figure. The presentation was by a rep. from a computer manufacturer, and the chief criticism from neuroscientists was that a transistor is not a neuron, nor was a "core" - the former being too simplistic, and the latter, too complicated.

The net result is that, yes, computers are coming close to being able to mimic the *neuron* count of small primate brains. They are at least 6 orders of magnitude away from being able to model the *connections* of that same brain.Speaker to Lab Animalshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10403328464472141601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6211929548240400184.post-36507768855786567682011-02-20T07:52:21.954-08:002011-02-20T07:52:21.954-08:00Something got lost in translation here. High end CPU chips crossed the billion transistor mark last year, and even if you're counting CPU cores instead of chips the biggest super computers are still only in the six figure range.

Last summer IBM claimed to have a cat brain simulation running on one of their super computers (if at only 25% realtime speed). Unfortunately for the people who were expecting magic insights into how the brain worked it was reportedly as much of a black box as the organic version.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6211929548240400184.post-36066688432275373392011-02-14T03:12:31.356-08:002011-02-14T03:12:31.356-08:00I wonder about how the processor architecture and ...I wonder about how the processor architecture and programming language used would affect the ability to model brain functions.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
